So, fantasy baseball is almost upon us and I am interested to hear from all of my compadres out there on their opinions of some things. I will start today with the most simplest of them all: Who are the top ten for this year?
Let’s start with some facts from last year. As some of you know, I play points league Yahoo fantasy (10 teams). In our league, the top ten players of 2006 were:
Ryan Howard
David Ortiz
Albert Pujols
Lance Berkman
Alfonso Soriano
Carlos Beltran
Johan Santana
Garrett Atkins
Chase Utley
Alex Rodriguez
Accoring to ESPN’s 2006 Player Rater which rates a more traditional 5×5 rotisserie on a rated metric scale, the top ten players of 2006 were:
Johan Santana
Albert Pujols
Ryan Howard
Jose Reyes
Alfonso Soriano
Chris Carpenter
Brandon Webb
David Ortiz
Derek “oh captain, my captain” Jeter
John Smoltz
Here is another reference. The top ten from www.fantasysportscentral.com are as follows. They have their final rankings based on a dollar value for salary cap leagues:
Jose Reyes
Albert Pujols
Alfonso Soriano
Ryan Howard
Derek Jeter
Johan Santana
David Ortiz
Carlos Beltran
Matt Holliday
Carl Crawford
So there you have it; some similarities, some differences, some surprises (Garrett Atkins? John Smoltz?). It seems as though there are a common five that planted themselves in the top ten no matter what the format. Pujols, Howard, Soriano, Santana and Ortiz seem to have been the overall five most valuable last season in fantasy.
My question, then, becomes - who are the top ten this year? Will either of these lists stay consistent? Will those top five be that valuable again? What about some of the big names that are not on either of these lists such as Miguel Cabrera, Vladimir Guerrero, David Wright, and man-crush Travis Hafner?
Let me know what format you play/prefer and who you think will be top ten.

Is this just a clever ruse to get my draft strategy, Ryan?
Not at all. Just curious what people are thinking. For us, for our league, I think my top ten would be:
Albert Pujols
Alfonso Soriano
David Ortiz
Ryan Howard
Alex Rodriguez
Johan Santana
Miguel Cabrera
Travis Hafner
Lance Berkman
Carlos Beltran
With Von Hayes just missing the top ten.
But I want to see why certain people have different players in their top ten.
You put Santana that high? I suppose it will depend on draft order. Also, it seems you are projecting yourself to draft 8th?
If you go look at total points from last year, Santana actually ended up 7th overall. Throw in the fact that he is so head and shoulders above the rest of the starting pitchers, and those combined tell me he is first round worthy. No other pitcher comes close, though. He ended up with 778 points and the next closest pitcher had 664; good for 42nd overall.
I think I’m going to enjoy listening to Regan be paranoid as to Ryan’s intentions this year. As to my top ten, that post will have to wait for another day when I’ve actually started my research for the season. And Regan’s right, it’s going to look real suspicious when Ryan “randomly” gets the exact pick he projects Hafner at. Hmmm…
Speaking of where we will draft, check your email soon for a potential solution since we would have a very difficult time getting us all together to pick numbers for an order.
Moving on to another topic tomorrow…..Astros’ batting lineup.
